21-run inning paves way for Marion years ago

Marion-Florence Peabody-Burns High School softball coach Charlotte Waner didn't really know what to expect heading into her team's first ever Mid-Central Activities Association softball game.

When all was said and done, it wasn't what anyone expected.

After a 14-6 victory in the first game of their doubleheader against Haven, the Warriors used a 21-run third inning in game two for a 26-2 victory and two game sweep of the 4A league school.

"I didn't know what to expect because we have a different mix of girls this year," Waner said. "I was pleased with the play of the girls both offensively and defensively."

Why shouldn't she be? In the two games the Warriors pushed across 40 runs, and gave up only six runs and six hits.

Senior Leann Thomas struck out 13 and pitched four scoreless innings in the first game, only to yield six runs, four unearned, in the last three innings. She also added four hits and four RBIs in the sweep.

"She's done a great job for me all four years," Waner said. "She is very strong both mentally and physically on the mound."

Junior Kara Holt pitched three hitless innings in game two, however she yielded two runs because of walks and errors.

"I think she was a little nervous before the game," Waner said of Holt. "But she settled in and did a great job."

In the two games the Warriors pounded 35 hits, with each starter collecting at least two.

Senior Amber Richmond went 6-7 in the two games, and juniors Holt and Megan Hudson racked up five hits each.

"I wasn't sure what to expect from our offense," Waner said.

After the sweep of the Wildcats it's obvious the Warriors can hit, but their bats will be put to the test this week when they play league foes Nickerson and Hoisington.

"We have a tough week," Waner said. "I don't know much about Hoisington except they have a really good tradition. But anyone is beatable."

The Warriors traveled Tuesday to Nickerson, and host their first league game at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
