Main Street was a center of activity Saturday, Merchants were pulling racks and tables out to the sidewalk; others already had their displays set up. Music filled the air, and most of the cafes were crowded. By 9 a.m. all stores were open for business and Marion's 1983 Campers' Weekend promotion was underway.

Gene Schimpf, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Schimpf of Marion, has been rubbing shoulders with the highest placed leaders of the world this week at Williamsburg, Va. A customer relations manager with Ford Motor Co. in the Washington, D.C. area, Schimpf often is called on to provide transportation for visiting dignitaries.

The First Mennonite Church, Hillsboro, was the setting May 14 for the wedding of Brenda L. Friesen and Danny Maddox, both of Salina. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Carl H. Friesen, Hillsboro, and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Maddox, White City.

Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Christensen and Amy entertained with a dinner May 22 in honor of Jay's graduation of Marion High School earlier in the day and his 18th birthday which was the following day.

It was a little hard to pick out anything special among students who were released from Pilsen Elementary School Thursday. Surely, there was a lot of yelling, running, and general rejoicing in every corner of the building. But, the 53 fifth and sixth graders who careened out the doors of the school at 3 p.m. crossed a bridge which will no long support students. The Pilsen school was closed. The school district plans to move the fifth and sixth graders to Lost Springs Elementary School, where they will share facilities with students in grades K-4.

Two Marion and one Florence resident were among the 3,890 recipients of degrees at Kansas State University's 120th commencement exercises. They are Brook Jae Beaston, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack V. Beaston, Marion, and Janelle Kay Bowers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Bowers, rural Marion, and William J. McGuire, son of Mr. and Mrs. William J. McGuire, rural Florence.

Winners for the annual St. Luke Hospital West Wing Poster Contest are Melissa Johnston, Kristi Herbel, David Goering and Jennifer Thole. Judges awards Thole first place. Johnston received second and Herbel was third. Goering received honorable mention.
