Communication dead spots frequently prevented people at the Department of Transportation's four sub-areas, Marion, Strong City, Council Grove, and McPherson, from reaching each other by radio, said area KDOT superintendent Ray Wilcox. To solve the problem KDOT is building a 200-foot tower to replace the 190-foot structure at its area headquarters here in Marion. Construction began June 7 and Wilcox estimates the new tower will be in use in two weeks.

Two girls from Marion will be among the finalists competing in the National Pre-Teen Pageant Friday and Saturday at the Broadview Hotel in Wichita. Vicki Kay Hartley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hartley, and Robin Monroe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Monroe, will be performing numbers they presented in Marion during Mary Ann's School of Dance recitals this spring.

Barbara Jean Costello and John Behen Loehr were married May 28 in St. Mark Church. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Costello, Marion. Mr. and Mrs. William H. Loehr, Topeka, are parents of the groom.

Birth announcements in this week's Marion County Record include Amy Sullivan Doak, daughter of Jerome and Kathleen Doak of Cleveland, Ohio, born May 17 and Joel Robert Thomas, son of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Thomas, born June 8.

The Rev. and Mrs. Perry Kallis, Angela and James will be the new residents of the Strassburg Baptist Church parsonage. Kallis is a graduate of the North American Baptist Seminary and preached his first sermon at the church Sunday.

Dennis Fike, son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Fike of Ramona, has joined The Federal Land Bank of Wichita as a summer intern in cooperation with Kansas State University. A graduate of Centre High School, Fike plans to complete a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics at KSU in May 1984.
