Marion City Commission voted Monday to cancel plans for removal of the bur oak tree at the northwest corner of Main and Elm streets;; The decision reverses a stand the commission took one week ago.

Beth Regier of Marion spent a week in New York City as part of a January interterm activity at Tabor College. A junior and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Regier, she attended Broadway plays and visited the Metropolitan Opera House, Wall Street, the World Trade Center, Radio City Music Hall, and other places.

Richard C. Soyez, 35, Marion, fought the cold last Tuesday morning as he spent the night pinned against a guardrail on K-150 about 15 miles east of Marion. Police said Soyez became pinned against the guardrail after he left his pickup parked along the roadside. The truck began to move and Soyez raced to jump in the cab. His attempt was unsuccessful and he became caught between the door as it struck the guardrail. He was discovered shortly after sunrise. He is in stable condition at St. Mary's Hospital in Emporia where he is suffering from injuries to his legs.

Several young twirlers from Pilsen performed at the Centre basketball half-time show Friday evening. They were Michelle Hajek, Ramie and Nikki Bina, Sara and Melissa Vinduska, Paula and Brenda Stika, Jennifer Nowak, and Meggan Silhan.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Friesen, Hillsboro, announce the engagement of their daughter, Brenda, of Salina, to Danny Maddox, also of Salina. Maddox is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Maddox of White City. The couple plans to be married in May.

Kathryn Hayes, a senior at Marion High school, has been designated a Watkins-Berger Scholar by the University of Kansas. She was one of 35 high school senior women so designated.
