Tuesday's edition of The MacNeil/Lehrer Report included a segment featuring Bill Meyer, editor of the Marion County Record. Originating live, a satellite uplink connected Meyer and three other newspapermen from around the country with hosts Robert MacNeil and Jim Lehrer.

David Blackim, president of Marion Builders, and other officials and friends of the organization, burned the mortgage on the senior center facility Sunday afternoon. City and state governmental officers also were present to join in the festivities which featured four separate mortgage fires.

Members of the school board voted Monday night to implement a plan to eliminate grades K-6 at Florence and transfer those students to Marion. The plan was recommended by school principals at Marion and Florence.

Jay Christensen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Christensen of Marion, is the December vocational agriculture student of the month. Jay, a Marion High School senior, is a fourth year vocational agriculture student.

Dean A. Armstrong has purchased controlling interest in the Florence State Bank through sale of the Frank B. Graham estate. Armstrong served as president of International Petroleum Services Inc. for the past two years. He is the brother of astronaut Neil Armstrong, who was the first man on the moon.

Marion High School students visited the state Capitol in Topeka Jan. 17 to discuss vocational education with legislators. Pictured as they visit with Rep. Duane Goossen, are Brenda Ellis, Christopher Blackman, Alf Tangvald, Kathy Hayes, and Marion Mayor Peggy Blackman.

Gary Klose won the annual Marion Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby Monday night. Klose's red racer went undefeated on its way to the checkered flag. Eric Kannady was second finishing just behind Klose on the track. Josh Martin won the third place trophy. Tim Summervill was awarded top prize on his sleek metallic blue racer.
