Volunteers from the Marion Ambulance Service received recognition Friday at the monthly Marion Chamber of Commerce meeting. Mayor Peggy Blackman and county ambulance director JoAnn Knak congratulated three men for 10 years of volunteer work. Those recognized were Gene Winkler, Ed Sandwell and Harvey Sanders.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Costello announce the engagement of their daughter, Barbara Jean, to John Behen Loehr, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Loehr of Topeka. The couple will be married May 28 at St. Mark Catholic Church, Marion.

Gary Steiner, Don Meysing, Randy Kahns, Lawrence Rindt, and Enno Burhoop took home the first place team trophy Saturday for Kahn's Oil Company at the 22nd annual Marion Bowling Tournament at MarBowl Lanes. First place in the singles competition went to Mark Ottensmeier. Roland Klein and Don Smith won the doubles competition and Enno Burhoop was the winner of the all events category. Mike Kalisek won the high-10 competition. In high-30 action, Smith took first in both handicap and scratch competitions.

Members of the Emmanuel Baptist Church will welcome a new minister for their congregation June 15 when Pastor Lynn Heinle accepts the call to that pulpit.

Investigators said Friday that a Wednesday afternoon house fire in Florence probably started in a reclining chair in the buildings dining room. The blaze, which started at about 1 p.m., took the life of Newton L. Griffith, 77, the lone occupant of the house.

Norma Kline and Twilah Williams presented a metal sculpture Warrior to Marion High School last week as a show of community support. The sculpture was created by Marion artist Ern Hett. The headdress was fashioned from a large stock of old locker keys donated by the school. The work was commissioned through funds raised from the sale of school stocking caps and senior vs. faculty matches.
