The final county census indicates Marion County has lost another 311 in population during the past year. Total head count is 15,908. Again this year Hillsboro showed the biggest loss and Peabody continued to show modest growth.

For the past eight years, Frank and Lorraine Havlik operated the Mainline Motel at 1305 E. Main, Marion. They now have agreed to sell the business and retire. The new owners are David and Janet Longhofer who are returning to Marion after spending the past eight years teaching junior high school in Sylvan Grove.

Five Marion High School students will join 245 students from Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Colorado when the Mid-America Band and Chorus stages five performances in Europe this summer. Debbie Rittgers, Kelly Blackman, Julie Hett, Cindee Miesse and Pat Fruechting have accepted spots in the chorus for the tour. The five Marion students also will be included in a 16-member small choir ensemble directed by former Marion High School music instructor Ken Forsyth.

Two Marion County graduates of Brown Mackie College, Salina, have passed the Oklahoma examination for court reporters. They are Cindy Harris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerry Harris of Marion, and Connie Kerbs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Kerbs of Tampa.

Phyllis Enos of Marion was awarded the Meierhoff Service Award last month at the Flint Hills Girl Scout Council meeting in Emporia. The award was established to recognize service to scouting in the community. Enos also received a 10-year service pin from the Council.

John Klenda, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Klenda of rural Marion, is serving as a legal intern this summer in the law office of Tim Karstetter at McPherson. Klenda is attending law school at Washburn University in Topeka. His wife, Pam, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Griffith of Marion.
