Things went downhill for a Marion floodway project subcontractor last week. Unknown persons took a short joyride that bottomed out in the flood control channel west of the old Pilsen Road. Stannard Construction Co. of Wichita estimates the bulldozer, worth $37,000, will have to be completely rebuilt.

Stan Utting of Hillsboro, manager of Tampa Cooperative Association, won the county golf championship Sunday at Marion Country Club with a total score of 73. Utting had a 35 on the first round and a 38 on the second, two strokes better than Bernie Waner who came in second. Rosse Case won the award for closest to the pin on number 3 and Jim Stotts received the same award for number 9.

Several hundred people attended the Marion Lake Open Fishing Derby on Sunday. Jim Lehrman of Goessel won the first place trophy in the individual class competition. Lehrman also won a portable television.

Betty Jean Bunnell of Marion has been hired as the seventh and eighth grade teacher in Greeley by St. John Elementary School. Betty will be graduated from Emporia State in August. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Bowers and a 1976 graduate of Marion High School.

Members of the Whitey's Bait Shop bowling team celebrated winning the top spot in their league with a dinner June 1 at Sirloin of America in Herington. Those who enjoyed the evening were Mr. and Mrs. Ed Sandwell, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Sanders, Carol and Christine, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Christensen, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bowyer and Mr. and Mrs. Junior Bredemeier.

Jeanne Keazer of Wichita, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Keazer of Marion, received a master's degree in social work at commencement exercises May 21 at the University of Kansas, Lawrence. She has accepted a position as a school social worker with the Learning Cooperative of North Central Kansas in Concordia. The cooperative serves six school districts in the area.
