The Kansas Department of Transportation will accept bids June 17 at Topeka on the long-awaited Main Street crossing of Luta Creek in Marion. The old concrete bridge will be removed, a two-lane detour will be provided over the creek channel during construction, and the finished project will be an earth-fill rather than a span. The fill will have a tube to carry water downstream.

Gifts for a priest always are problems for those who number men of the cloth among relatives or friends but puppies fill the bill sometimes. Monsignor Arthur Tonne of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church will be celebrating his 50th anniversary of priesthood Sunday and is excited about a gift of two 10-week-old Collies, Rocky and Porkey.

Ann Bryant Carr, who was married to Pat Carr on May 8, was complimented with a "come and go" shower of grocery and miscellaneous items June 6 at Eastmoor United Methodist Church. Hostesses were Marge Christensen, Norma Kline, Vivian Conyers, Della Coe and Mary M. Hett.

Jean and Bud Pierce, who have been square dancing since 1952, are pictured as they "promenade" as guests of honor at a surprise party held in their behalf. Bud has been caller for the Marion City Squares since 1957, and was honored by a crowd of about 150 square dancers across the state for his 25th anniversary as a caller.

Strassburg Baptist Church called an ordination council Thursday evening to consider ordaining Barry Seifert to the gospel ministry. Some 70 pastors and laymen from Oklahoma and Kansas Southwestern Conference churches served as members of the council. After cross examination and discussions, members of the council found themselves satisfied with the candidate's presentation and recommended him for ordination.

Bill Meyer, editor of the Marion County Record and president of Kansas Press Association, was the featured speaker at a meeting of Southwest Kansas Editorial Association newspapermen held at Great Bend Saturday.
