The 1979 Marion County wheat harvest had doubled as a weed harvest by the middle of this week. Excessive rains over the past month had encouraged undesirable foliage up to even more undesirable heights. Still, this may turn out to be one of the most profitable harvest ever.

The contract has been let to construct an attractive and spacious new building for the Marion National Bank, to be located on the same site as the present building at Third and Main. The bank will move to temporary quarters at the east end of the block about August 1. That building, owned by Dorothy Varenhorst, is known locally as the former location of Buckley's Grocery.

Thomas Nelson, Burdick, has accepted a teaching position at a new junior college in Kumamoto, Japan, on the south island of Kyushu. Following several months for language training, he will go to Kumamoto to teach English at an all girls school. His contract is for 33 months.

Jami Shirley, Jackie Richmond and Linda Williams attended Ted Owens' basketball camp for girls for two weeks on the campus of the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

Mrs. Terry Holt, a recent bride, was guest of honor at a come and go grocery shower Sunday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Tom McLinden.

Robert Hoover and his wife Fernetta were honored guests at a dinner Saturday night at the VFW hall at Marion. The occasion was Bob's retirement after completing 35 years federal service — 32 years with the Soil Conservation Service and the remaining portion in military service during World War II. Hoover will continue with conservation work. He has been employed by Scully Estates to assist them in conservation practices.

Boy Scouts of Marion's Troop 102 spent from June 17 to 23 at camp on Quivera Scout Ranch near Sedan. Those who attended included Monte Dalke, Mules Zeller, Jeff Conyers, Jeff Harris, Mike Jordan, Tim Jordan, Chris Meierhoff, Danny Horsch, Roger Hudlin and leaders John Jordan and Keith Conyers.
