A group of people representing Ecker-Fulkerson-Slifer VFW post toured the Veterans Administration Hospital on June 25. The group was composed of 14 members of the post auxiliary, three girls visiting Marion from Denver, and two men. Included were Edith Loveless, Elizabeth Buck, Sylvia Winchester, Marie Laudner, Michelle Waltner, Lisa Vargo, Bertha Helmer, Tena Olsen, Naomi Behrendt, Lenora Klose, Olinda Klein, Mel Chance, Shawn Stryker, Josephine Chance, Linda Wilhelm, Aline Bernhardt, Evelyn Stage, and Zeffie Marler.

Janet Hett won first place in the Kansas Women's Christian Temperance Union essay contest for junior high age students. Her essay will now be entered in national competition. Janet is a student at Florence Middle School and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hett, rural Marion.

Births announced this week included a son, Jeffrey Wayne, born to Mr. and Mrs. Gary Melcher of El Dorado and a son, Frederick Ruben, born to Mr. and Mrs. Terry Silhan of rural Marion.

Four Marion County girls represent the best chance in a decade that the Tri-County Fair Junior Miss will not be from Morris or Dickinson county. Julie Hett, Linda Schaffer, Lori Hett, and Theresa Kroupa will join 15 other 17-year-old girls competing for the Junior Miss title.

Combines made fast work of the harvest on the Harry Heiser farm Wednesday afternoon and Thursday. Neighbors furnishing combines and trucks were Dalmer Kaufman, Tim and Tom, Richard Meisinger, Alvin and Agnes Bernhardt and Jim and Teresa Bernhardt.
