Two juveniles and an 18-year-old Haysville youth who grew up at Peabody have been arrested in connection with the July 29 slaying of Peabody bank teller Grant Avery. County Attorney John Johnson barred reporters from the "probable cause" hearing of murder charges filed Saturday in district court against Timothy Newfield.

Marion Kiwanians will want to be present Monday noon when Jack Brier, Secretary of State, will speak to them about the upcoming presidential preference primary in Kansas.

Dick and Dennis Maggard have announced that they will open their Main Street Auto Repair in Marion. They will do general automobile repair and service work. Main Street Auto Repair is located at 124 East Main, former Cook Motors service shop. Entrance for vehicles is through the alley between First and Second streets.

Fresh pies sold like hot cakes Saturday during the weekly Farmers Market. Alvina Hoffman and her husband Earl set up a table on Main Street. At $2 each, customers quickly outnumbered pies.

Marion-based ambulance crew members outfitted the new ambulance with parts from the old ones Friday. Emergency Medical Technicians included Lucille Britain, Bob Matz, Randy Rediker, Sharon Lundgren, Bill Holmes. Harvey Sanders, A.J. Coe, Ed Sandwell and Richard Britain.

The Marion team placed second this year in the Mid-Kansas Horseshoe League. Team members are Barney McCarty, Tip McFadden, Ed Steinle, Reinhardt Steinle, Ed Jeffries, Ernest Meierhoff, Henry Klein and Rex Seibel. The team also will compete in a tournament at the Marion County Fair.

A three-week series of matched play between women golfers at Marion Country Club was completed this week. Twelve were entered in the competition with Sadie Bernhardt taking first place honors. Second place winner was Louise Wood.

Elaine Nuss, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leland Nuss of Marion, was selected Kansas Jr. Shorthorn Association queen July 21 at Ellsworth.
