The City of Marion will help pay for eight new informational and directional signs along highways. The signs will be located near Elmdale on U.S.-50 (double faced), three miles west and four miles west (Turner and Canada corners) on U.S.-56, and two miles east of Marion on U.S.-77. Another sign is also being painted on the former Coors billboard on West Main.

Stone Prairie, near Marion, is the only registered youth hostel in Kansas. Owned and operation by Nancy Hart, it is located three miles west of Marion's city limits, then 2.5 miles south — due south of the main access road to Marion Lake. The hostel is open from March through November, offering full services not only to youth but also for any group.

The staff of the Marion County Record has received an announcement of the birth of a daughter, Jessica Lee, to Steve and Sara Ames of Emporia on Aug. 17. Jessica's mother, Sara Jane, is the very popular former United Parcel deliveryman in this area.

Ernest Meierhoff grew an 8.5 pound banana cantaloupe in his home garden at 201 Grant, Marion. Meierhoff is the most recent entrant in the annual Marion County Record produce derby.

Matt and Ron Wineinger of Marion won "best of breed of opposite sex" in Silver Martin rabbits at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson this week. Their exhibit of rabbits also won "best opposite sex" in French Lop and also in the Rex breed in the youth competition. They are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wineinger of Marion.

Marion Kiwanis Club has pledged a $2,000 contribution to the fund for establishing a shelter house and playground equipment at East Park.
