Theme of Marion's 68th Old Settlers' Day Saturday was "Bright, Dry Future." Oldest settler among them all is Betty Richardson. She has seen every one of Marion's 68 Old Settlers' Days. Born in 1883 in Pretty Prairie, Ill., Richardson came to Marion with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin S. Bryan, when she was six months old. In the afternoon, a few hundred of the thousands in attendance gathered around the speakers' platform in Central Park for dedication ceremonies of the flood control project by the City of Marion.
Theresa Kroupa and Kevin McGahee were crowned Homecoming Queen and King at half time of the Herington-Marion football game Friday evening. The Herington Railers rolled over Marion, chilling the homecoming crowd with a 32-14 victory. The loss dropped last year's league champions to the bottom of the Cottonwood Valley League.
Having a time of their lives over the past weekend in Marion were Floyd and Ann Yaussi of Longmont, Colo., and Jim and Pat Criswell of Coffeyville. Yaussi was a basketball coach at MHS and Criswell was a music teacher. The two couples had not been able to get together for several years and settled upon a reunion at Marion during the Old Settlers' weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Hett of Peabody wish to announce the arrival of their first child, a son, Jerod Leroy. Jerod was born Oct. 1 at St. Luke Hospital.
Many, many neighbors and friends enjoyed a watermelon feed at Amelia Park Wednesday evening provided by Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Baxter and Larry. The Baxters went to Buhler and brought back the load of delicious melons.
Former Marion Police Chief Lyle Sanders died Tuesday at a Newton Hospital. He had been in failing health for several weeks.
Pictured as they jog toward the five-mile check point are Stephanie Loney, Amy Hett and Cindy Heerey who lead a group toward South Third Street Sunday during the annual Marion County CROP Walk. More than 200 people walked, ran or jogged 10 miles or rode bicycles 20 miles to raise money for hungry people throughout the world.
