Over 400 people braved an early fall chill Saturday night to attend the annual Oktoberfest celebration in Ramona. The evening's activities, which included games and a barbecued beef dinner at Ramona Park, began with the city's first parade down Main Street. Over 30 entries were logged.

Marion High School will crown the 1982 football homecoming queen Friday evening during halftime ceremonies at the Marion-Centre game. This year's candidates are Lisa Richmond, Suzanne Steward and Cindy Heerey. Jami Shirley, the 1981 homecoming queen, will be on hand to crown the new queen.

Marion County Farm Bureau members will hear Senator Nancy Kassebaum Oct. 23 at the annual banquet meeting in Marion. The U.S. Senator from Kansas will speak following the 6:30 p.m. banquet in St. Mark's Activity Center.

A short ceremony was held before the start of the Marion-Hillsboro game Friday night to honor someone who helped make the game possible. Though they lost the game, Marion boasted five players from the Kelsey lineage. Hillsboro had two Trojans descended from the Kelsey lineage. Viola Kelsey of Marion was recognized as the mother to one and grandmother to seven of the players on the field. She was presented with a corsage of appreciation from the Marion school district.

The Centre School board voted Monday night to hold a public meeting Nov. 8 to hear comments concerning a plan to shut down Pilsen Elementary School. A report released last week through the school district estimates that USD 398 could save as much as $41,000 per year in salaries, upkeep, and utilities if the building were closed.

The Sweet Adelines presented a program Monday night at Marion Manor. Members of the group are LaDonna Sherbert, Connie Fisher, Karen Bradshaw, Greta Smith, Jan Eitzen, Anita Weber, Billie Hurtig, Lou Roberts, Celia Byer. and Nanette Lowry.
