Howard Vander Clute, national commander-in-chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, visited Ecker-Fulkerson-Slifer Post 6958 in Marion Monday and told those assembled that "Jimmy Carter is the most anti-veteran president on record." Since Carter was elected, Vander Clute said, there are 51,000 fewer beds available in VA hospitals, 8,000 fewer medical and surgical staff members and 700 fewer VA regional staff members than were previously available to serve veterans.

Bryce Ollenberger of Palm Springs, Calif., has joined Soaring Wings Music, Inc., the music publishing division of the Studio Group in Los Angeles. Ollenberger, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ollenberger of Marion. He also majored in music and dramatics at the University of Kansas.

Jayson Hanschu, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Junior Hanschu of Ramona, finished second place in the area-wide Punt, Pass, and Kick contest competition in Kansas City over the weekend. The winner will represent the seven state area in the finals at Houston.

There were lots of fun, games, and treats at a Halloween party on the 31st at the home of Charlotte and Eric Thies. Others attending were Bobby Bivens, Andy Hett, Neil Hett, Shannon Klein, Jennifer McLain, Shelly Moore, Allison Ogden, Eric Pippin, Sherry Plenert, Robin Summervill, Jeff Williams, and Ed Zeller.

The City Squares square dance club enjoyed a masquerade Halloween party Nov. 1 in the basement of the Marion City Building. Hosts were Mildred and Ira Newcomer and Janice and Rosse Case. The prize for the best costume went to Elizabeth Buck. Betty Lange of Hillsboro received the door prize.

Brian Bowers of Marion will join 100 FFA members from all across the nation to provide music and entertainment for the more than 20,000 FFA members and guests expected to attend the national FFA convention this week in Kansas City, Mo. Brian is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Bowers.
