Marion County followed the trend established across Kansas Tuesday with a heavy vote in the general election. The countywide one percent additional sales tax was soundly defeated, 3331 to 1602, and voters in the City of Marion approved a bond issue from better water by an overwhelming 697 to 181. The sales tax issue carried in only one precinct, Logan Township.

St. Luke Hospital has been commended by the American Hospital Association for its ability to control costs and to better meet the new Medicare cost-per-case reimbursement requirements.

The Centre School District board of education will hold a public hearing at 8 p.m. Monday to discuss the closing of Pilsen Elementary School.

Jenny Martens celebrated her seventh birthday Oct. 29. Those who came for fun and games after school Thursday were Laura Walz, Kevin Marler, Treva Janzen, Karen Klose, Traci Darrow, Allison Ford, Danielle Longhofer, Kayla Jensen, Corey and Christopher Darrow, Becky Swan, Jill Suderman, Julie and Jodie Jacobson, Ellie Barta-Moran, and Jason Martens.

Kristi Enos of Marion, a student at Florence Elementary School, won third place in the national WCTU essay contest in the elementary division. The Florence WCTU sponsors the annual essay contest.

Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Nienstedt were very pleased to receive a long distance call from Oral Roberts wishing them a happy 50th wedding anniversary.

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Belton, Tillie Hein, Tom Duggan and Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Mueller of Tampa returned home Monday afternoon from a nine day trip by bus to Washington, D.C.
