Amidst a crowd of unexpected protesters, the Centre School Board voted Monday night to continue with proceedings to close the district's elementary school at Pilsen. The 6 to 1 board vote followed more than an hour of remarks made by Pilsen residents, most of whom favored converting the 25-year-old building into a junior high school.

Sarah Penner has been named administrator at St. Luke Hospital in Marion, according to Robert Anderson, president of the Lutheran Hospital and Homes Society. The announcement came Nov. 1 from the society's headquarters in Fargo, N.D. Penner served as director of nursing services at the hospital for the past 14 years and was named acting administrator in July following the resignation of Steve McCourt.

Marion County Community Arts Council is expecting a full house Friday evening for their dinner-theater production, "Clementine's," which begins at 7 p.m. at St. Mark's Activity Center. Hostess for the evening will be Peggy Blackman as Clementine. Cast of "The Labors of Love," which follows dinner, includes Penny Burkholder, Bob Brookens, Pat Klenda, Dorothy Varenhorst, Nathan Smith, Feebie Smith, Greta Smith, Kerry Sandwell, Pat Brock, Kelly Blackman, and Pat Fox.

Kim Buethe, 16-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Buethe of Lincolnville, will represent Marion County 4-H Youth at the American Royal 4-H Conference in Kansas City Nov. 14-16. The conference trip is awarded to outstanding older 4-H'ers from Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Iowa.

Are residents checked and re-checked thermometers Friday morning, hardly able to believe what they saw. In some, the mercury stood at 10 degrees, and in others, 16 degrees. That's much too cold for the first part of November.
