The first baby born at St. Luke Hospital in 1981 arrived at 12:20 a.m. Sunday (Jan. 18). Parents, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Widler, welcomed Brandon Lee, seven pounds, two ounces, who was delivered by Dr. T.C. Ensey. Brandon is the winner of the Marion County Record's annual "first baby contest."

Jane E. Vajnar of Tampa is the winner of the Kansas "Our Freedom Safeguards Your Freedom" contest. She will now represent the state in national competition. The wife of Tampa area farmer Robert Vajnar, she had previously won the Marion County Record sponsored contest during National Newspaper Week in October. Last year's winner in the Marion County Record sponsored contest was Bruce Winkler of Marion. His entry won second in state competition.

Jami Shirley scored 36 points and collected eight rebounds Monday night to upstage Chase County, 69-39, in Cottonwood Valley League action. It was one of Shirley's best performances of her career, said Marion coach Leroy Burton. He also complimented the work of senior guard Linda Williams who scored 15 points the first half and ended the game with 19 points before fouling out.

Marriage vows were exchanged by Dorothy Waner and Lawrence Gilbert at 6:15 p.m. Jan. 2 at their country home. Father Gerald Pathe performed the double ring ceremony. The couple was attended by Garry and Marcia Vogel of Marion.

Keith Allen Goentzel, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Goentzel of Salina, was the honored guest Sunday afternoon at a "come and go" shower at the Rex Siebert home. Hostesses were Vernolis Siebert, Lois Anderson, and Mary Longhofer.
