The Newspaper Editorial Workshop Services this week announced that the Marion County Record has won second place in the annual Newspaper Typography Awards for weeklies under 3,500. For the past two years the Marion County Record won first place in the awards. Recently the newspaper also won third place in the NEWS-sponsored "general excellence" category.

Marion's flood protection project, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-designed floodway that stretches around the west side of the city to protect life and property from the ravages of rampaging water, has been inspected and approved.

Two grass greens sustained serious damage this weekend at Marion Country Club. The incident was the most serious act of vandalism reported at the club since the grass greens were installed in 1975. Estimated replacement of the greens would cost more than $1,000.

Riddles, rhymes, and books about other things were the subject of ruminations by Kelli Hajek, Vicki Kay Hartley and Tami Stenzel last Thursday. The girls were selecting books to take home. It was book distribution day at Bown Corby School. The books are rewards for accomplishments in the Reading Is Fundamental program.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Costello announce the marriage of their son Patrick Daniel Costello to Jeanette Gorman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Gorman of Shawnee Mission. The ceremony was attended by the immediate families of the couple and was held Saturday evening, Dec. 15, at the home of the bride's parents.

Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Christensen entertained all their employees and wives to a Christmas dinner. They took one group to the Marion Country Club Saturday evening and another group to Kingfisher's Inn Sunday for dinner. Tuesday evening they took all the high school boys who work for them to the Big Chef for a pizza supper.

Boosted by reports of big crude oil price hikes by the OPEC, regular gasoline prices climbed to $1 a gallon at all Marion service stations this week.
