A Leon couple were killed late Sunday when their single-engine Cessna 172 airplane crashed nine miles south and a mile east of Hillsboro. The couple had flown to Hillsboro from El Dorado to watch their daughter perform in a Tabor College music production of Handel's "Messiah."

The home of Mrs. Eugene Christensen was the setting for the Neo Century Christmas party. Children of club members gave a program of Christmas carols done in solo, duet, instrument and verse. Those giving number were Jennifer and Michelle Thole, Amy Christensen, Lori Tice, Jeremy and Jason May, Andy Hett, Greg and Brad Tice and Larry and Scott Dalrymple.

Mr. and Mrs. Steve Matz of Lincolnville are the proud parents of a daughter, Lindsay Renee, born Dec. 14. Lindsay weighed seven pounds one ounce and was 19 inches long.

Meat judges from Marion High School won top honors at a district contest held Saturday in Hutchinson. Team members are Daniel Bowers, Julian Seaman, Matt Wineinger, and Joe Makovec.

Larry Hartke, son of T.L. Hartke of Lincolnville, has been promoted to the rank of major in the U.S. Army. He is an instructor with the Academy of Health Sciences at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and is a 1969 graduate of Kansas State University.

An open house birthday party will be held all day Thursday at Florence to honor Dr. John Slifer. The longtime community physician and always willing civic worker will celebrate his birthday on Thursday. Well wishers may drop by during regular office hours, 9 a.m. until noon and from 2 to 5 p.m.

Farm Bureau delegates from Marion County who attended the annual meeting in Topeka Dec. 6 through 8 included Carson Crawford, Jean Jost, Leland Albrecht, Leonard Frantz and Jim Cott.

Uniformed officers will be present at Marion Gymnasium at all future basketball games. School officials are concerned about recent rowdyism following basketball games at the gym.
