About 250 Marion grade schoolers air mailed via multicolored balloons pen pal messages Thursday afternoon in front of Marion Elementary School. The 1:30 launch was aided by a strong south wind. One balloon has already been discovered in Creighton, Mo.

In other matters discussed at the weekly meeting of Kiwanis Club was the selection of three candidates for this summer's Sunflower Boys' State. The nominees are Jon Wiebe, Andy Edwardson and Rod Just, all juniors at Marion High School. Roger Wilson has been selected as an alternate.

"Li'l Abner," Centre High School's music and drama department's spring musical, will be a dinner-theatre named to the all-Cottonwood Valley League basketball team in polling announced this week. This marks the second year in a row that Greg Boyle, Aaron Hett and Kevin Jirak have been selected for the honor.

Ed Hett, son of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Hett, will be a member of the Wichita Symphony chorus for their presentation of "Requiem" by Giuseppe Verdi.

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hoffener of Cedar Point announce the engagement of their daughter, Barbara Jean, to Perry Lee Steiner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Steiner of Durham. The couple is planning a May 23 wedding at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church in Salina.

Mayor Peggy Blackman appeared before a legislative committee in the state Capitol at Topeka to protest action of the Water Resources Board and in opposition to a water measure introduced in the Senate.

Nine area businesses, Marion County Extension Department and Flint Hills Continuing Program are sponsoring a bridal fair Saturday at Valley United Methodist Church.
