Marion firemen were summoned to the Marion County Jail Tuesday afternoon to extinguish a fire on the second floor. Details were sketchy last Tuesday, but it was reported that the fire began in one of the cells when sparks from a welder ignited a number of mattresses and blankets.

Fourteen Marion Elementary School students in Jean Case's fifth grade class entered the Mid-America Nursing Home's poster contest this month. Gina Schaefer, Tim Kramer and Larry McLain submitted the winning posters.

Jack Webb and Bill Drummond won the Marion Country Club's two-man best ball handicap tournament Sunday. Webb and Drummond shot a 12 under par 60 to capture the trophy. Don Druse and Bob Druse finished second with a 61. Leo Blackman and Ed Costello were third with a 63.

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Silhan of Marion wish to announce the engagement of their daughter, Deborah, to Richard Britain, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Britain of Marion. The couple plans a Sept. 12 wedding.

Donita Makovec, bride-elect of Gary Turk, was guest of honor at a miscellaneous bridal shower Saturday morning at the home of Polly Ferrell. Hostesses were Mrs. Ferrell, Renda Thompson, and Molly Smith.

Priscilla Club celebrated its 75th anniversary May 12 at a tea held in the home of Mrs. David W. Wheeler. Co-hostesses were Mrs. Kenneth Muse and Mrs. W.H. Carpenter.

A large crowd attended a hog roast at the Marion County Lake hall Saturday evening hosted by Blair and Nancy Tharp to celebrate Nancy's graduation from nursing school and Bob Richmond's birthday.
