Plagued by long drought, a late spring freeze, then a prolonged wet spell which re-emerged Monday, the 1981 wheat crop began pouring into area grain bins last week. The recent deluge of rain notwithstanding, combines combed ruts in soggy fields and wheat trucks trickled in to elevators with their payloads over the weekend. Some farmers were claiming nearly 20 bushels per acre on an average, far below the standard of 35 bushels per acre, but better than anticipated.

A Kansas Department of Transportation artist's concept of the Luta Creek crossing on Marion's Main Street is printed in this issue. The present lights would be preserved, the roadway would be widened, there would be sidewalks on both sides, and a gently grass-covered slope would lead to the stream.

Marion police received a false alarm Tuesday afternoon that a body was floating in the river, south of Marion. A Marion resident stopped police officers and told them he had seen something that might have been a human body floating in the river while he was fishing. Officers went to the river and found that the body was that of a beaver.

Richard E. Dale, registered pharmacist and owner of Dale's Rexall Drug Store at Florence for the past 35 years, has announced that he will close the business on July 3.

Daniel Ludwig, a driver for Ludwig Truck Lie, Florence, took first place in the five-axle livestock class of the Kansas Truck Roadeo, June 12-13, at Schilling AFB, Salina.

Elaine Mosler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Mosler, rural Hallowell, and Gary Ewert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ewert, Marion, were married May 29 in the First United Methodist Church at Columbus.

Feebie Smith, newly appointed agent for Shield of Shelter Insurance in the Marion area, will host an informal open house July 1 at her office in her home on South Third. Smith was recently appointed local agent at Marion, after the untimely death of her husband, Jim Smith, in a tragic automobile accident.
