In an effort to shelter Marion from a possible water shortage, the Marion City Commission on Monday decided to attempt to back up the waters of the Mud and Clear creeks north of town. Commissioners instructed City Superintendent Junior Bredemeier to close the north (inlet) flood control gate in order to raise the water level in the creeks about 18 inches creating a temporary reservoir.

The Meierhoff garden in Jex Addition is one of the most productive in town and the envy of less energetic folks, who marvel at the produce Ernie gets from his ground.

Marion Municipal Pool, public beaches at the two lakes and the private pool at Marion County Club have been popular places during the past two weeks of record breaking weather — with daily thermometer reading above the century mark.

A bridal shower was held Monday at the home of Mrs. Randy Mills, rural Florence, to honor Rhonda Williams, bride-elect of Brad Heerey.

Three Marion High School girls have entered the Herington Junior Miss competition to be conducted July 20 and 21. Gena Helmer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Helmer, Marion; Jan Nuss, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leland Nuss, also of Marion; and Kim Schaffer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Schaffer, Florence, were among early entries in the competition.

Emmanuel Baptist Church of Marion was the setting June 21 for the candlelight worship service uniting Joanne Louis Popp and David Allen Loewen in marriage. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Popp of Marion. Dr. and Mrs. Henry Loewen of Hillsboro are parents of the groom.
