Mary Holub, a 1981 Centre High School graduate, was the recipient of the annual Ecker-Fulkerson-Slifer VFW's scholarship for Marymount College. Presentation of the $350 scholarship occurred Friday night during halftime of the group's weekly bingo session.

Wendy E. Hett, daughter of Rocky and Shirley Jo Hett of Marion, has been selected to participate in Colorado Sky Trek, a national event sponsored by Girl Scouts of the Unites States and its affiliate, Wagon Wheel Council of Colorado Springs. Activities include a backpacking trip up Pikes Peak and a day-long tour of Cripple Creek mining town.

Joella Smith and Melissa Robinson, both seniors at Marion High School, will compete in the Tri-County Junior Miss pageant in Herington, July 27. Smith is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Royal Smith of Marion. Robinson is the daughter of Elora Robinson, Marion.

Nancy Tharp was among 25 students who graduated this year from the Butler County Community College nursing class. The students were in Topeka last week to take state board examinations to verify them as registered nurses.

Chemical-soaked work clothes were responsible for a fire at the Rex Wilson home, 225 S. Roosevelt last Wednesday afternoon. The Wilsons' son, Kevin McGahee, who works at Kan Go, Inc., was washing his work clothes in a washing machine in the basement when the fire began. Vapors from chemicals on the clothes evidently ignited after the controls in the washing machine sparked. McGahee was taken to St. Luke Hospital where he remains, being treated for first degree burns.

Anita Kristek, Cindi Mueller and Becky Kleiber of Tampa left early Monday morning on the Marion County 4-H exchange trip to Montana. En route they will be touring the Redlands, Black Hills, Mount Rushmore and the Custer Battlefield. They will tour Yellowstone Park on the return trip.
