The storage of anhydrous ammonia in Marion, and resulting fears of those who live near the tanks which contain the vapors, were matters of grave concern and serious study when the Marion City Commission met Monday.

County Commissioners will decide within the next two weeks whether they can afford a renovated county jail. Commissioners Elmer Uphoff, Ed Broz and Harold Jost balked at a bid of $334,970 for the complete project at a special bid letting session Tuesday afternoon in the courthouse.

Martin Tice of Marion is a man of many talents. The former high school administrator is not only in the business management, accounting, investment and real estate lines — he's also an auctioneer. Tice has just returned from Kansas City where he successfully completed the course in auctioneering and auction sales management at the Missouri Auction School

Former Marion postmaster and longtime postal employee Paul Shahan died Tuesday morning at St. Luke Hospital following a long illness.

A "polka Mass" will be featured at the annual Homecoming Day celebration at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church on Sunday.

Members of Hospital District No. 1 Auxiliary will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the organization of its group at a dinner to be held Sept. 11.

The Marion High School class of 1930 will celebrate its golden anniversary with a reunion on Old Settlers' Day. Those who want reservations should contact Mrs. Herman (Iva Hett) Unruh by the first week in September.
