The Marion County Record was notified this week that the newspaper has been awarded second place in general excellence, nationally, by the Newspaper Editorial Workshop Services (NEWS).

Marion artists Les and Celia Byer will present an art display throughout the remainder of September and the first week of October at Brown Auditorium, McPherson College. Work featured will include acrylics, oil, watercolor, pencil and ink drawings, as well as pottery and hoop weavings. The Byers own and operate Flint Hills Clay Works in Marion, and both are art teachers.

Square dance lessons will be offered Sept. 23 in the basement of the city building in Marion. Bud Pierce will be the caller and will be aided in instructing by members of the City Squares, sponsoring organization.

Darryl Woodson, Garden City, was hired Monday night as superintendent for the Marion School District (USD 408). Woodson, 51, replaces John Wiebe who resigned Aug. 15. The board of education offered the Oklahoma native a two-year contract at $30,000 each year.

Boy Scout Troop 102 camped last weekend at Jerry Jensen's lease, north of Marion. Boys attending included Mike Jordan, Chris Meierhoff, Tim Jordan, Danny Horsch, Joey Fitzpatrick, Jeff Fitzpatrick and new scout, Mike Schill. Leaders present were Thad Meierhoff, Bill Fitzpatrick and John Jordan.

Rhonda June Williams and Bradley C. Heerey were united in marriage Aug. 15 at the Florence Christian Church, Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Donald D. Williams of Florence and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Heerey of Marion.
