This year city workers shut the municipal swimming pool down five days early because of a practical joke. Attendants at the pool reported to police Thursday that the water had been dyed purple overnight. City officials decided that the cost of draining and refilling the pool would be to great to justify only a few days use.

This week's Produce Derby featured Hawaiian tomatoes grown by Mrs. Leland Weber of Marion. The two tomatoes weighed 1 1/4 and 1 3/4 pounds. Two-year-old Fred Silhan and his sister Meggan, 4, brought an 80-pound pumpkin, while Amy Helmer showed two pumpkins measuring 18 and 21 inches around.

Mark Jirak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Jirak of Tampa, has been named a silver award winner in regional Future Farmers of America outdoor recreation proficiency competition.

Jim Hoch, son of Mrs. Wharton Hoch of Marion, completed requirements for the master's degree in computer science and was graduated from the University of Michigan in June.

Truck drivers along U.S.-56 at the east end of Marion were dismayed Thursday when they ran into something bigger than their rigs. The three-story house, owned by Jim Crofoot, blocked eastbound traffic for about 30 minutes until movers turned left onto Coble Street.

Five of Marion High School's outstanding seniors will be guests at a joint meeting of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary Sept. 17 when a potluck picnic will be held in Central Park for the purpose of hearing reports about Girls' State and Boys' State. Loraine and Loreen Wiens and Mickey Costello were delegates to Girls' State. Andy Edwardson and Rodney Just were delegates to Boys' State.

Nearly four years ago Dr. G. George Ens purchased the old building that formerly housed Kansas Wholesale on Hillsboro's Main Street. Today, known as "Old Towne," it has been restored to its former elegance and stands as a symbol for things the way they used to be. The building, with "1887" prominently displayed on its cornice, is now the home of a gift shop and gallery, a kitchen and a photo studio.
