The Ol' Thing is a year older this week, with this edition completing volume 112. She starts on volume 113 next week. It was established in 1869 when volume one was started with issue number one that September. She's still the "Queen of the Cottonwood Valley" and hopes to serve the readers of this area with countless editions making volume after volume.

Ron Cork, administrator at St. Luke Hospital, led a tour of the hospital district's newly-opened medical clinic Friday at the regular monthly meeting of the Marion Chamber of Commerce.

Service awards, in appreciation of their years of devoted duty to the school district, were presented last week by Ken Vinduska, board president, to Patsy Waner, 10 years; Lois Anderson, 10 years; Ella Winter, 25 years; and Pauline Edmunds, 30 years.

Kristin Groening celebrated her seventh birthday Friday at a party in Central Park. A "Smurf" birthday cake, ice cream and Kool-aid were served by Kristin's mother and sister, Shirley and Jenny Groening, and her grandmothers, Sylvia Helmer and Irma Groening. The following were guests: Kristine Bateman, Amy Christensen, Kristi Kraus, Lesley Sieger, Ashley Loomis, Jason May, Thurston Thies, Charlie Helmer, Theron Nienstedt and Tim Summervill.

Births announced in this week's issue were: a daughter, Elizabeth Ann, born to Mr. and Mrs. Neil Colle of McPherson; a son, Justin Tyler, born to Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Hett, Marion; a daughter, Marjorie Mae, born to Mike and Alana Taylor, Marion; and a son, Michael Lee, born to Mr. and Mrs. Michael Robinson, Marion.

Tressie Kelsey has been promoted to a sales position at Round-Up Enterprises, Hillsboro. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Art Miles of Hillsboro, she and her husband Marion "Bud" Kelsey also live there. He is the son of Mrs. Donald Kelsey of Marion.

Three young men from Marion have returned from their summer assignments as members of the Kansas National Guard. Jeff Harris, Doug Cusick and Kelly Shaft are members of Detachment 2, 169th Engineer Company at Council Grove.
