Marion High School convincingly won the Kansas Class 2A state track championship at Wichita Saturday. The Warriors scored 30 points, easily outdistancing second-place Ellsworth's 23. This was Marion's first state track title since 1912 and its first official state championship in any sport for over 30 years.

Kenneth Funk Construction of Hillsboro has just completed work on a new all-metal building for Antelope Grain Company. The 40'x100' structure is adjacent to the railroad tracks and features large loading dock facilities and ample storage area. Owners, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Nienstedt, indicate the building will be used for bag fertilizer storage.

Marion High School senior Joe Endres, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Endres of Marion, was named "Athlete of the Year" May 17 at the annual Kiwanis-sponsored Athletic Banquet. Endres, in receiving the award, was cited for being a starting end on the Warrior football squad, a starting guard with the basketball team, and a premier hurdler with the track squad.

Members of the Elk extension unit are getting the old school house shining for the annual Elk Homecoming May 28. Former residents of the community are invited to bring a basket dinner and come prepared to enjoy the day which will include decorating graves of veterans buried in the Elk cemetery and a program in the afternoon.

Willabeth Meier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Meier of rural Marion, competed in the South Central FFA "Sweetheart" contest at Kingman Friday and was the winner of the first place award. She now will represent the district at the state contest to be held at the state fair this fall.

Mrs. Jim Smith hosted a coffee Friday morning as a farewell for Mrs. Darrell Weigart who will be moving to Olathe in the near future. Other guests were Mrs. Robert Bailey, Mrs. Darryl Brooks, Mrs. Gerald Kelsey, Mrs. Ron Schill and Mrs. Bob Brewer.
