Marion Cove will be the site of ceremonies scheduled for Saturday, June 14, when the $13.8 million dam and 6,160 acre reservoir of the U.S. Army of Engineers Marion Dam and Reservoir will be formally dedicated.

Specialist 4 George F. Martinez of Newton was killed in action June 8, 1969, while on his second tour of action in Vietnam. He is the 33-year-old son of Juan Martinez of Marion. George was killed when a booby trap detonated while he was on a military mission. His death in action is the third of the men who have gone from Marion Selective Service Board. Others have been Bob Jack Goodwin, Cedar Point, killed Sept. 3, 1967, and Pfc. Robert Lee Boese, May 23, 1969.

In a public meeting Tuesday night school patrons of the Florence U-4 district voted to unify with Marion Unified School District 408. Two other possible choices were offered, to unify with Peabody-Burns USD or with Chase County USD. Close to 100 people were at the meeting and of those who voted at the conclusion of the meeting, 54 people chose Marion, one chose Peabody-Burns, and 15 cast their vote for unifying with the Chase County USD.

A group of students from Marion High School are attending the all-state music clinic this week at Kansas State University in Manhattan. They are Laura Brose, Gerry Warneke, Diane Weber, Shelley Batt, Marilee McGinness, Sharon Kroupa, Teresa Hett, Mike Edmunds, and vocal instructor Ken Forsyth.

Anita Hoffman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Hoffman, received her nurses cap at a ceremony June 9 in Wichita. Miss Hoffman is attending the Wichita School of Practical Nursing and has completed phase one of the nursing program. She is in training at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.

Kevin Jirak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jirak, celebrated his 6th birthday June 4 with a swimming party. The following boys attended: Brad Seifert, Paul Loney, Nathan Smith, Greg Boyle David O'Hair, Brad and Darryl Herbel, Jeff Jirak, and Kevin's brothers, Tim and Rodney.
