Donahue Manufacturing Company, Durham, has started construction on a new 40,000 square foot manufacturing plant, president James Donahue announced recently. The completed structure will house manufacturing and office functions of Donahue, which are currently housed in six building in Durham. Kenneth Funk Construction of Hillsboro is the contractor.

Dr. Robert C. Harder, director of the state Department of Social Welfare, has announced the award of a federal grant of $3,000 to the Hilltop Manor senior citizens' center to provide second year services for the elderly in the area. The project provides recreation, educational and social activities for the community. The local project is part of a state and national effort to serve the elderly through programs and services that enable them to live with dignity and independence and to participate in a full and meaningful way in community life.

Sgt. Raymond Martinez, formerly of Marion, has been awarded the Combat Infantry badge and the Good Conduct medal while serving in Vietnam. He also was selected as the "outstanding soldier" in his outfit and was commended by the Commanding General of the First Cavalry and presented an appropriate plaque. Mrs. Martinez and children are living in Newton while Sgt. Martinez is overseas. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Cogdill of Marion.

Lincolnville is planning a Fourth of July celebration. Extension units, Walther League members and other organizations are working to make the event successful. Various games, booths, etc., have been planned as well as a ball game in the afternoon or early evening. Homemade ice cream will be for sale.

Marion Lake claimed its eighth drowning victim early during the cool after-midnight hours on the Fourth of July. The victim, a 19-year-old man from Wichita, was fishing with friends at the "no bridge bridge" near Durham, when he apparently fell from the abandoned abutment into the lake.
