Mr. and Mrs. Walt Hett received a letter this week from their son Steve in Vietnam telling them that he had the honor to be selected as one of the guards for President Richard Nixon when he visited their area. Steve is serving with the 199th Light Infantry Brigade at Bien Hoa in South Vietnam.

"Basically Sound," a local rock music group, took top honors recently in a "battle of the bands" at Cottonwood Falls. Members of the Marion group are Ed Cook, Lloyd Behrendt, Steve Fillipp, and Mike Steinel.

A new periodical is now being published in the county seat, and if the first issue is any example of things to come, the newspaper will be a delight for all subscribers. "The Daily Blab and Horn" is the flag, and the publishing company goes under the title of "MPI, Marion Press International." Editor is J.E. Higgins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Higgins, and the reporter is J.L. Coe son of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Coe. Price of the periodical is five cents.

Ehrlich's bowling team enjoyed supper together Sunday evening at Doc's Steak House in Wichita. Later in the evening all attended the car races at 81 Speedway. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Steve Kristek, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Winkler, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ehrlich, Mr. and Mrs. Delton Richmond, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Williams, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Richmond.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Keazer and Doug hosted a birthday supper Friday evening honoring Mrs. Jim Keazer and Miss Jeanne Keazer. Present were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Keazer of Emporia, Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Thompson and Renda, and the hosts.

Two aspiring Marion space travelers made their "astronest" this week, made their preliminary countdown, and at 10 a.m. Tuesday blasted off for a simulated travel in space. Laura Brose and Gerri Warneke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Brose and Mr. and Mrs. Harlow Warneke, Marion, prepared their space trip in the basement of Mrs. Homer Reinke, Laura's grandmother, complete with provisions, accommodations, and flashing lights. They plan to remain in the capsule four days, until Saturday morning.
