Mrs. Minnie Spain announced this week that she plans to expand her 50-bed nursing home facility here to a 72-bed unit with the addition of new wing in the near future.

This year the speaker on Old Settlers' Day in Marion will be a well known Wichita dentist, Dr. Leonard Navrat, who grew up in the Pilsen community and continues to maintain close ties with many friends and relatives in the area. Born and raised in Marion County, he is the son of Mike Navrat and the late Helen Navrat. He attended school at both Pilsen and Marion, and graduated from Lincolnville High School in 1949.

AB James Carr has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, and is presently stationed at Chanute, Illinois, with the Air National Guard. Carr is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Max Carr of Marion.

Members of American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary met in the Legion hall Sept. 14 for a joint potluck supper. Delegates to Girls' and Boys' State and their parents were guests. Reports of their experiences at the two youth programs were given by Teresa Case, Jo Marie Mueller, Don Bredemeier, Eddie Hett and Chris Costello.

Babies recognized in the "Look Who's Here" column include the adoption of a daughter, Katie Sue, by Mr. and Mrs. Michael Smith of Florence, Alabama; Christopher Kenneth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Neil Colle of McPherson; and Robert Wharton II, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hoch of Wichita.

Navy Petty Officer Second Class Daniel F. Holub, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest F. Holub of Route 4, Marion, re-enlisted in the Navy for two years during ceremonies with Attack Squadron 147 at the Naval Air Station, Lemoore, California.

Mr. and Mrs. John Olsen announce the engagement of their daughter, Nancy Lee, to Marlin Joe Miller of Wichita. A November wedding is planned.

The Marion County Record won two awards in the Kansas Better Newspaper Contest Saturday when results were announced at the state fair. The paper won first place in news reporting and feature writing and third place in typography, printing and makeup.
