Jim Ferrell's mare Rio Retta Bar won three blue ribbons at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson. She won the 68 mare class, Western Pleasure, and Grand Champion mare awards. This adds to her long list of wins at many horse shows and fairs across the nation.

Two Marion County students are among the 58 who have been selected for the Kansas State University Concert Choir. They are Keith Collett and Shelley Batt. Keith is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Collett of rural Marion and Shelley is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Batt of Marion.

John Crofoot of Cedar Point was named "man of the week" by the Emporia Gazette. The paper said Crofoot is "a hardworking member of a family that has been part and parcel of Chase County's Flint Hills for generations creating jobs and business wherever they turn."

Denice Helmer was named "FFA Sweetheart" by the local chapter two weeks ago at the Hillsboro football game here. Bob Hoffman, chapter president, was her escort. Other contestants were Kathy Kelsey, Ruth Endres. Sandy Marler, Cindy Esslinger, Bev Swanson, Dena Edmisson, Alice Gantz, Marty Beaston, and Sharon Anderson.

Eric Meyer, a 1971 graduate of Marion High School, was one of 24 students at the University of Kansas selected this week as Summerfield Scholars. Scholars were selected among students who have made exceptionally high academic records and excelled in other areas since entering KU.

Mrs. Ed McGinness of rural Marion will be a featured soloist at the Salina District meeting of the Women's' Society of Christian Service. Mrs. McGinness is a member of the Aulne United Methodist Church.

Winners of the Marion Motor Center- sponsored "punt, pass and kick" contest will compete Saturday in the zone contests at Sacred Heart High School in Salina. Winners are as follows: Tim Richmond, 8-year-old; Greg Boyle, 9-year-old; Brad Esslinger, 10-year-old; Jerry Hett, 11-year-old; and Ricky Richmond, 12-year-old.
