Four farmsteads, including homes and outbuildings, were destroyed by tornadoes; a 40-foot steel bridge floated into timber; hogs and calves were drowned; U.S.-50 was closed between Cedar Point and Clements; wheat and alfalfa were beaten down by hail; acres and acres of row crops that escaped the flood and hail storms of a week earlier were completely lost in the latest wild escapade of weather. It all happened Monday night.

Seven Girl Scouts received first class awards — the highest award girls can receive — at a candlelight ceremony May 27 at Marion Christian Church. Scouts were Melody Meier, Beverly Swanson, Sandra Marler, Barbara Boyle, Teresa Smith, Debra Enos, and Carol Steinel.

Kim Dody, 29, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dody of Marion, was killed Friday near Roanoke, Va., in the airplane crash that also claimed the life of World War II hero Audie Murphy and other businessmen. Kim was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Dody of Colorado Springs.

The Marion Daylight Donut and Coffee Shop has opened on Main Street across from the post office. The shop will feature a complete selection of pastries and donuts, along with a coffee bar.

Father Greg Tajchman, O.F.M., will be ordained a priest June 12, the 81st birthday of his grandfather, Anton Tajchman of Marion. The ordination ceremonies will be held in the Chapel of St. Leonard College, Dayton, Ohio.

Sgt. Dean Jost, son of Sheriff and Mrs. June Jost, is stationed at Zweibrucken Air Base in Germany where he is a member of the 86th Tactical Fighter Wing, but dogs are his work, not planes. Dean works in the training of patrol dogs who are highly versatile in their use in all forms of civilian, as well as military police duties.

Jack Webb was the winner of the championship flight of the Marion Country Club Memorial Day golf tournament held Sunday. Webb shot a 38-33 for a total of 71. He was followed by Dr. Earl Wood with a 73 and Boyce Baumgardner with 74. Bob Brooks took first place in the first flight with a 79. Second flight winner was Ed Colburn with 87.
