The eighth winner in the Marion County Record Vagabond Weekend contest was Mrs. Clayton Hamm of Marion, who registered at Cedar Villa Steak House. The Hamms recently returned from vacation, but plan to make good use of the free Vagabond Weekend sometime later this summer.

Fire fed by exploding drums of oil and other combustible material destroyed the heavy equipment shop of the Rock Island Railroad at Herington early Monday evening.

Barbara Christiansen, Miss Marion County, will be going to Pratt for the 1970 Miss Kansas Scholarship Pageant July 7. She will be accompanied by her official chaperone, Mrs. Dennis Yauk of Durham. Barbara is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Christiansen, Durham.

The Bank Hotel and Restaurant in Strong City, long a landmark in the area, was destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning. The Bank Hotel for years has been a gathering place for cattlemen and cowboys from the Flint Hills area. It was built in 1879.

The Cub Scout kite derby was held Saturday at Marion Municipal Airport. Rodney Schmidt won a prize for keeping his kite airborne the longest length of time; Kevin Wilson got the award for the smoothest takeoff; Kirk O'Hair had the best glider; and Ronald Kristek had the most acrobatic kite.

Major Laura Jane Bredemeier, an Army nurse and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herb Bredemeier of Marion, has completed the 22 week Army Nurse Corps officer career course at the U.S. Army Medical Field Service School, Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
