A big crowd of more than 500 persons came to Marion's Central Park Friday evening to enjoy the annual picnic of Marion County 4-H Clubs for businessmen of the county.

Young readers in the Marion area have been reading with a purpose by taking part in the Marion City Library summer reading program which ended July 31. Children were divided into three groups and were required to read 10 books on different subjects in order to receive a certificate. Thirty certificates were awarded. There were three winners, one from each group. The winners were Lisa Wilson, for reading 37 books; Lynley Gutsch, 29 books; and Marilyn Esslinger, 30 books.

Three Kansas senators met last week when Girls' Nation senators Marilee McGinness of Marion and Ann Bemis of Hays visited U.S. Senator Bob Dole in his Washington office.

Mrs. Harry Laubhan entertained with a party at the Marion park Monday afternoon in honor of Laurie's 10th birthday. She was assisted by Mrs. Gerald Kelsey and Vickie Youk. Others present were Laurie Silhan, Janel Smith, Cindy Bernhardt, Brenda Friesen, Lori Kelsey, Becky Houdyshell, Renda Thompson, Donna Stovall, Laurie Ratzloff, and Kristine, Kerry and Michael Kelsey.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ewert of Marion announce the engagement of their daughter, Donna, to Jerome Hajek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hajek of Lost Springs. A September wedding is planned.

Debbi Case, Teresa Case and Becky Wood are attending Presbyterian Synod Assembly on the campus of the College of Emporia. Also attending are Mrs. Gerry Harris, who is serving as a counselor, and Mrs. William Staub who is serving as vocal music instructor.

Tournament action Friday and Saturday evenings closed out this year's activities in Marion's summer youth program. Farmers and Drovers took the Midget honors while Pee Wee honors went to Marion National. Individual awards were given Saturday evening to Casey Case as the most valuable player in the Pee Wees, to Mike Richmond for hitting .727 in the Pee Wee games, to Brad Heerey as most valuable Midget player, and to Pat Carr for being Midget batting champion with a .547 average.
