Crickets got off the hearth and went to town Tuesday night. By 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, business and professional men were out in front of their offices sweeping, and even scooping, the small black jumpers into piles.

Two of the three finalists in competition for the Miss Marion County title are Roxanne Hague and Beverly Hoch of Marion. They along with Dayle Reimer, will reign over the county fair at Hillsboro this week and one of the three will be selected and announced as the winner Thursday night.

In what seems to be a "battle of the squashes" David Hett, son of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Hett, brought in a 12-pound zucchini squash this week that measures 24 inches long. Last week, Mrs. August Ollek brought in an 10-inch one. The first guy never has a chance.

Roger "Bud" Hannaford has been elected Lieutenant Governor of Division Five of Kiwanis. He was so chosen at the district convention held in Topeka last week. Delegates from Marion were Jack Applegate, Leland Heidebrecht and Charles Halls.

Mr. and Mrs. Ira Penner, Mrs. George McCulloch, Mrs. Martin Druse, Katherine Swan, Erlean Hamm, Maude Thompson and Edith Greer of Wichita returned Sunday evening from a 16-day tour through 11 southeastern states and to Nassau in the Bahama Islands by way of Friends University Tours.

New arrivals announced in this week's issue include the following: Ty Andrew Waner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Waner, Tracy Allison, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ames of Batesville, Ark.; Matthew Wayne, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Koehn of Burns; and Heidi Ann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Slater of Green Mountain Falls, Colo.

The Marion team of horseshoe pitchers, sponsored by Marion National Bank, has won the Mid — Kansas League championship with a record of 11 victories and only one loss.

Pvt. Galen Helmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Will Helmer of Marion, and Pvt. Jim Darrow, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Darrow of Marion, recently completed eight weeks of basic training at the U.S. Army Training Center at Fort Campbell Kentucky.
