Every family and business house in Marion will be personally called upon in the next few days to make a donation or pledge to the building enlargement fund for St. Luke Hospital. Construction has started on the new addition with completion this summer. Fifty workers will start to canvass today to raise $30,000 dollars that must be raised to finish the fund.

Marion's volunteer fire department members were given special recognition for their service to the community this week. They were given special certificates of appreciation by Lloyd M. Davies, state arson investigator, on behalf of the State Fire Marshal's department. The men, with their years of service, are: Walter Fruechting 13, Ruben Winter, Ralph Mathews, and Hazel Meierhoff 10, Stanley Anderson 9, Leroy Hoffman, Alva Thompson, Chas. Bredemeier, and Ralph Popp 7, Marion Smith and W.M. Pierce 6, Hurshel Raleigh 4, Joe Childs, W.J. Hassinger, and John Britain 3.

Mrs. George Helmer entertained a number of Barbara's friends after school March 24 in honor of her birthday. Games were played and ice cream and cake were enjoyed by the following guests: Frances Sanders, Margaret Weber, Carol Caselman, Edith Hett, Nancy Kayton, Jackie Evans, Cherri Knoblock, Neva Kelsey, Jean Christensen, Patty Bledsoe, Carol Cowan, and Connie Ford.

The county spelling contest, to be held here April 2, has been moved from the courtroom to the commissioners' room in the court house. Mrs. Ben Wiens of Hillsboro will pronounce the spelling words to contestants, and Mrs. James Ray and Miss Julia Campbell of Marion will be the judges, reports Viola W. Klassen, county superintendent.
