MEMORIES:   50 years ago

Miss Maude Thompson, principal and teacher at the Bown-Corby School (lower elementary school) in Marion, was highly honored this week as one of seven Kansas educators to received a "Master Teacher award" at Emporia State Teachers College. The award is in recognition of outstanding service to education. Her service in Marion includes 17 years at Hill grade school, three at the high school, and 15 at Bown-Corby.

Marion High School's one-act play cast shared top honors with Wichita Southeast High School when they received a "I" rating at the state play festival Saturday in Lawrence. They were the only two schools in the state to receive this rating. Members of the cast of the MHS entry, "Time Limit," were Laurence Priddle, Neil Hoopes, Junior Post, Wayne Thies, Jim Christensen, Paul Schmersey, Paul Ford, Junior Bledsoe, Tom Shirley and Richard Vogel.

The folks in Marion who tuned on a Wichita TV station last Thursday saw Mrs. Frank Tajchman and her daughter, Mrs. Harold Byram of Haysville, on the Party Line show with John Froome as master of ceremonies. Mrs. Tajchman received two boxes of advertised products and she and her daughter were dinner guests at one of the nice restaurants in Wichita.

The girls of the west fifth grade at Bown-Corby had a farewell party for Nancy Kayton and her sister, Judy Kayton, at the home of Jackie Sue Evans Wednesday after school. Guests included Nancy Kayton and her Korean adopted sister, Judy, Carol Ann Caselman, Connie Jost, Jeannie Christensen, Connie Stage, Carol Cowman, Barbara Helmer, Neva Kelsey, Edith Hett, and Sherry Jo Knoblock.
