MEMORIES: 50 years ago
A fish that caused lots of eyes to bulge last Sunday when it was put on the scales at the county lake office was the 48-pound catfish caught Saturday night on a throw line in deep water on the Cottonwood River. The full 45-inch-length fish was caught by Harold Vinduska and Wencel Vlk. When they dressed the fish later that day they said it contained a fish weighing almost 1 1/2 pounds and a lot of fish eggs.
R.C. Van Buren retired last week after 22 years of devoted service as custodian at Bown-Corby Elementary School. Students, teachers, and school officials gathered on the school grounds the last day of school and gave their good friend a going away present and surprise tribute.
An afternoon tea complimenting Miss Ann Davies was given Monday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Gene Heath with Mrs. John Wheeler, Mrs. Wm. DuVall and Mrs. Gail Merrill as assisting hostesses. Miss Davies returned Saturday from Kansas State College following completion of her junior year and will be married June 1 to Edward Slocombe of Peabody.
Mrs. Agnes Price and her son, John Price, entertained a number of young men at a pizza party Saturday evening honoring Robert Ehrlich whose wedding will be an event of the summer. The guest list included Leonard Smith, Ronnie Post, Jim Smith, Ronnie Hiebert, Ray Richmond, Leon Lais, Jerry Stage, Kenneth Winkley, Harold Shields, Don Kline and Dean Williams.
Miss Viola Thompson presented the following piano pupils in a recital last Saturday afternoon at the Methodist church: Mary, Kathleen, and Donnie Westerhaus, Bobby Hoch, Karen Keazer, Donna and Barbara Helmer, Patrick Costello, Judy Lee, Carmela Kotelensky, Anita Schick, Pattie Sue Plenert, Anita and Roy Van Buren, Virginia Goentzel, Connie and Karen Jost, Carleen Regier, Jean and Dick Morse, Johnny Hoover, Judy Richards, Beverly Winter and Julia Wooldridge.
The annual membership payments to the Marion County Club for the club year set from May 1 this year to next year, are now due, the board of directors announce The cost is $20 per year.
