It is with a heavy heart that the Record reports to its readers the death on Jan. 3 of its senior editor, Wallis Hoch, following a fall at the home of his son in Washington, D.C.

Leslie Broadstreet announced this week that he has purchased the half interest of Laurence Blaker in the local Studio Moderne. They previously had been partners in the business, but now it will be owned by Broadstreet in total.

Arthur Schmersey was elected president of the board of directors of the Marion Community Athletic Association, Monday night, at the first board meeting of the year.

Marion County's entry in the state cherry pie baking contest on Jan. 11 is Margaret Sellers of the Jayhawk 4-H Club of Florence. Margaret has been a county winner in the cherry pie baking contest for the past three years and has placed in the top eight at the state contest for the past two years. In 1956 she was the second place winner. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Sellers.

Moulton, Marion, born Jan. 3; David Edward, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Williams, Florence, born Jan. 6; Michael John, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Markham, Hyattsville, Md., born Jan. 5; Patti Diane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Hansen, Yates Center, born Dec. 24; and Tammy Sue, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Slifer, El Dorado, born Jan. 2.

Mr. and Mrs. Ernest F. Meierhoff of Marion announce the engagement of their daughter, Marilyn Kay, to Gary Eugene Hageberg, son of Mrs. Velma Hageberg of Burdick. No date has been set for the wedding.

A mile-long train of more than 60 hay balers, the largest single shipment of balers ever made, will leave the John Deere Ottumwa Works tomorrow for Kansas City. Two carloads will come to Hett's Implement, local John Deere Dealers, in Marion.

There were no winners in this week's Cash Day drawing. Those who missed out on the cash were: Mrs. H.W. Meredith, Marion, $50; Meta Kasler, Marion, $30; Norma Lou Sly, Marion, $5; Jesse O'Byrne, Florence, $20; and Mrs. Maude Firebaugh, Marion, $5.
