Marion County Courthouse will receive a number of needed improvements and modernization features this year. New double metal and plate glass doors will be installed on the north and west, and a new door on the south basement entrance. Air conditioning is planned and the basement will be redecorated.

The first baby of 1957 to be born at St. Luke Hospital is Dale Vernon Hiebert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Hiebert of Route 1, Florence. The young man was born Jan. 3 and weighed 8 pounds 9 ounces.

Pat Longhofer entertained a number of friends Friday evening for a slumber party. Guests included Marsha McCartney, Karen and Donna Jost, Eileen Pavey, Julia Wooldridge, Geraldine Davis, Janet Stiller, Rosalie Dohner and Pat Holcomb.

The Kansas Turnpike from Emporia to Wichita and the Oklahoma line and 60 miles of new highway from Newton of Salina were approved this week as part of the huge interstate highway system to be financed largely by federal funds.

Dr. and Mrs. T.C. Ensey and three sons left by plane Christmas Day for the Orange Bowl game at Miami, Florida, returning Wednesday of this week. They enjoyed the game and the pageantry and the boys enjoyed swimming in the warm sunshine while in Florida.

Mr. and Mrs. Billy Slusser asked 80 guests for a New Year's Eve party at the city building Monday evening, honoring their daughter, Patsy, and two friends, Donna Kelsey and Beverly Bredemeier.

The "Six Fat Dutchmen," nationally famous polka band, will be in Herington this coming Thursday evening. The dance is another in a series of name bands being brought to Herington by the Chamber of Commerce.

Mrs. Harry Harris will go to Topeka Sunday to take part in the ceremonies when George Docking will be inaugurated as governor. On Wednesday morning, Mrs. Harris will entertain with a coffee for Mrs. Docking in the green room at the Jayhawk Hotel when the women newspaper and radio editors will be guests.

Carolyn Merrill asked friends for a brunch Saturday morning for a get-together of high school friends who are now away at school. Guests included Etta Mae Rempel, Carol Allen, Brenda Razor and Joyce Conyers, all students at Emporia State College; Ann Davies, a student at Kansas State, Manhattan; and Judy Thatch, who is attending Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Md. Carolyn is a student at the University of Kansas.
