Large dirt moving equipment went to work for the State Highway Commission this week at the site for the new district highway shops north of Marion.

Marion Junior High Braves are justly proud of their record during the past two years, having won six first-place trophies in that time. Members of the basketball team pictured on the front page include Ronnie Oelschlager, Gary Loveless, John Christensen, Gerald Kelsey, Jerry Schwemmer, Steve Seaton, John Russell, Larry Evans, Billy Weber, and Larry McCarty. Also pictured are Howard Collett and Jerry Dyck, coaches, and Jerry Loveless, manager.

The City Commission this week mailed an official letter of thanks to Mr. and Mrs. George Helmer for their donation of the site for the swimming pool. The letter was signed by Mayor Ira Newcomer, Commissioner of Finance Earl Kreuter, and Commissioner of Utilities Paul Keazer.

Michael Seaton and Earl Winter, Two Eagle Scouts from Marion, were in Wichita Monday to attend the Eagle Scout Silver Recognition Day for Eagle Scouts in the Wichita area. Each scout had a sponsor for a trip through some industrial plant or a visit to a professional office. Michael was a guest at Beech Aircraft Corporation and Earl was taken through the Wood Products Company's plant.

The seventh grade Braves, while not doing as well as their eighth grade schoolmates, have also marked up a good record. They won third place in the Hillsboro tourney in their division. Team members are Gary King, Don Druse, Steve Greenemeyer, Gary Roberts, Dennis Pankratz, Tom Good, Jan Hayen, Harvey Sanders, Tim Williams, Dennis Schroeder and Gary Hammer. Mike Childs is their manager.

Installation of three new aluminum and glass door entrances at the county courthouse was completed last week. The new doors are the very latest and best type modern glass doors, and make a fine improvement to the building. Installation was done by Cook Paint and Varnish Company of Salina.
