A new record was set in the mile relay Saturday at the Kansas Indoor Track meet in Manhattan. The Marion team of Bledsoe, Christensen, Roberts, and Vogel set the record. They were clocked at 3:36, breaking the old record of 3:40.3 set in 1955 by Scott City. At the same meet, Billy Mills of Haskel Institute ran the fastest mile ever recorded by a Kansas schoolboy when he ran it in 4:23.3. This broke the old record of 4:24.7 sent in 1930 by Glenn Cunningham.

The Legion Auxiliary and Kiwanis Club have selected Sandra Higgins and Caroline Susdorf to go to Lawrence June 9-16 to participate in the annual Girls' State on the campus of the University of Kansas. The Kiwanis and American Legion have chosen Neil Hoopes and James Christensen to attend Boys' State which will be held June 2-8 in Wichita.

Continued intermittent showers this week total 1.14 more inches of moisture brought predictions of an almost definite end to the drouth that has plagued the central plains area for the past several years.

William Moneypeny, for many years an outstanding coach and principal at Marion High School, has been named to the 3-member State Board of Social Welfare by Governor George Docking.

Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Higgins purchased the Marion Pharmacy and took over operation of the business Thursday. A graduate of the University of Kansas, Jerry has been working for the past five years as a pharmacist at Valley Center.

Roger Hannaford, who received his BS degree from Emporia State College in January, has been hired to teach social studies in the junior high school at El Dorado next year. Roger has remained in school this semester, working on his master's degree and expects to continue in school throughout the summer.

The Father Emil J. Kapaun Council, Pilsen, celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of the order with a clergy night at the regular meeting Monday evening. Members of the clergy honored at the meeting were Father Arthur Tonne, chaplain at Pilsen; Father Vincent Brown, St. Mark's church; and Father Vincent J. Dillon, chaplain at St. Luke Hospital. The council is planning a celebration of its sixth anniversary June 30.
