Workmen on several crews are making good strides these days toward completion of Marion's new municipal swimming pool, and the building, filtration equipment, wading pool and landscaping that are part and parcel of the complete project. The construction of this type of pool (steel) is deemed especially good in areas where there is an appreciable shifting of the ground. Longer life and less upkeep is predicted.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. and his herd manager, James Smith, Poughquag, New York, visited the O.J. Shields Hereford farm southeast of Lost Springs Saturday. Mr. Roosevelt and his employee have been looking at cattle through this section with which to stock his farm. Earlier in the week, he and his brother Elliott were fortunate in escaping injury in a crash of their private plane on take-off from a southeast Kansas airport.

The American Legion-sponsored county wide "Veterans Party" will be held Friday with all vets invited.

Mrs. Albert Hart successfully surprised her daughter, Faith Louise, on her birthday Saturday by asking in a number of teen-agers for a party in the afternoon. The young folks enjoyed games and a scavenger hunt and Mrs. Hart served a picnic supper and birthday cake to the group. Invited guests included Mary Lou Schmidt, Georgie Helmer, Julie Wooldridge, Deanna Kimball, Geraldine Davis, Connie Fisher, Deanna Glover and Carla Kline.

Connie Mack III, a member of the longtime Athletic baseball family, was in Marion this week helping to complete local arrangements for a busload of boosters to attend the double header July 14 when the Kansas City team will host the Washington Senators.

A class of eight children received their first holy communion May 9 at Holy Redeemer Catholic church. There were Darlene Pecinovsky, Shirley McDowell, Lynn Vajnar, Leonard Jirak, Charles Bezdek, Kelly Novak, Mark Hajek and Tommy Christiansen. Flower girls were Patty Costello, Barbara Christiansen, Rita Jirak and Loralie McDowell.
