JULY 1, 1954

After many weeks of planning, members of Marion High School graduating classes of 1922 and 1923 met at the country club Sunday afternoon for their first reunion since leaving high school. Co-chairman for the affair were Mrs. Norma Hannaford and Miss Tommy Matlock who sent out the invitations and planned the reunion. William Immer and Cedric Smith, Wichita, class of '23, acted as masters of ceremony.

Mrs. Boyd Higgins Jr., who has been home demonstration agent in Marion County for the past year, has resigned effective July 18. Miss Jean Engle, who comes to Marion as the new agent, is a native of Dickinson County and a graduate of Kansas State.

A number of accidents were reported during the week, mostly accompanying harvest work. Bill Carr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Max Carr, had a foot badly mangled while combining. Lawrence Blankley had a finger so badly mangled while working on his combine that the finger had to be amputated. Ivan Winter, son of Velma Winter, south of Marion, was cranking his tractor when it backfired breaking his right arm above the wrist. Gary Hamm, son of Mr. and Mrs. Art Hamm, south of Marion, fell from his bicycle Monday and broke his arm above the wrist. Ferd Unruh, Lehigh, had a narrow escape while fixing a tire on his truck. The rim flew off causing lacerations and bruises to his arm.

A new induction call has been announced by the Marion County Selective Service Board. The board did not have to select from its available list since three youth volunteered for service. They are Kenneth Eugene Rice, Hillsboro, Keith Ashcraft, Hillsboro, and Michael Brodhead, Marion.

At the annual school meeting of the Antelope school it was voted to have a nine months school next year. This will come as a bitter blow for the students of that school, no doubt, but the board feels the extra month will enable the teacher to give some attention to outside subjects other than the three Rs. This is the first one teacher school in Marion County to vote for a nine months school.
