The city commission this week received written confirmation of a recent verbal offer by George Helmer for a site for the proposed municipal swimming pool. The Helmer land lies east and north of his service station, and there is considerable opinion that it would be one of the most favorable sites that could be obtained for a pool.

The new gymnasium at Florence will see its first basketball game on Nov. 7 when a team of former coaches and players from this area will meet the Arkansas Travelers. The Travelers is an all-girl team rated top in the nation and famous all over.

A welcome service for newcomers to Marion, named the "Welcome Basket" will start operation Nov. 1. Under the plan, members of the sponsoring organization, the 20th Century Club, will call on new families and present them with a basket of greetings from businessmen and individuals in the city.

Births announced in this issue include a daughter, Gayle Denise, born Oct. 14 to Mr. and Mrs. Roger Hannaford of Emporia and a boy, Kim Anthony, born Oct. 18 to Mr. and Mrs. Dalmer Kaufman.

The Sub Deb club visited the Presbyterian church in a body Sunday morning and the high school trio, Margie Bernhardt, Mary Lou Conyers, and Maxine Hinz, all Sub Debs, sang a special number accompanied by Kay Navrat.

As a farewell courtesy for Mrs. Gordon Wolf, who leaves next Tuesday for New York and sails Nov. 2 for Europe, an afternoon tea was given in her honor Saturday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Ira Newcomer. Assisting hostesses were Mrs. Norma Hannaford and Mrs. Wallis Hoch.

Five Marion County hunters who went to Salida, Colo., for deer hunting the first of the week, returned Thursday each bringing home a fine specimen. The successful hunters included Albert Klenda, Clement Klenda, Charles Stika, Paul Meysing, and Bill Schimpf.

Jake Reddig of Hillsboro had his name called for first prize in this week's Cash Day drawing. Since he was not present, first prize next week will be $430. Alvin Bernhardt, Tampa, received $15 as second prize; Thelma Castleberry of Herington was not present to claim third prize; Mrs. Kenneth Richter received fourth prize of $5; and David D. Ens of Hillsboro was not present to claim fifth prize.
